As Thanksgiving draws near, it’s traditionally a time for families and friends to gather, reflect on their blessings, and share a meal together. However, for many people in Waterloo region, that meal is far from certain.

“This Thanksgiving, many of our neighbours may not have the opportunity to enjoy a festive meal or even meet their basic needs. That’s why we are asking our community to step up and help serve up hope this Thanksgiving,” says Kim Wilhelm, CEO of The Food Bank of Waterloo Region.

How to get involved

Donate food or funds: The Food Bank is calling for non-perishable food donations, especially items like canned beans, dry pasta, soups, stews, and chili. These donations can be dropped off at local grocery stores or at police, fire, or paramedic stations across Kitchener-Waterloo. Financial contributions can also be made online at thefoodbank.ca/thanksgiving, allowing The Food Bank to buy essential items for nutritious meals. Normally, every dollar donated provided provides two healthy meals, but thanks to a matching gift by Conestoga Meats, that dollar now provides four meals. Donate by 11:59 p.m. on Oct. 14 to double your impact.

Support Oktoberfest events: Members can also participate in Oktoberfest events that support The Food Bank, including the Onkel Hans Food Drive. On Monday, Oct. 14, during the Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest Thanksgiving Day Parade, volunteers from The Food Bank will collect cash donations and non-perishable food items. Parade goers are encouraged to bring a donation. Texting ‘PARADE’ to 30333 is another easy giving option along the parade route. Last year, the Onkel Hans Food Drive raised 17,130 meals for people in need. A list of participating events can be found at thefoodbank.ca/events.

Volunteer time: Those looking to make a direct impact can volunteer at The Food Bank’s distribution centre or assist with an upcoming fundraising event. For volunteer opportunities after Thanksgiving, visit thefoodbank.ca/volunteer.

“Whether you choose to donate food, funds, or your time, every contribution matters,” Wilhelm adds. “Together, we can ensure that no one in our community goes hungry this Thanksgiving.”

In Waterloo region, one in 10 households accesses a food hamper program. Non-perishable food donations and monetary contributions enable The Food Bank to support the 54 partner organizations in the Community Food Assistance Network, which provide essential food to those in need throughout the region.
