Craig Stanhope is excited to share his love of candy and snacks with the community.

Craig Stanhope's love of treats was born at a young age.

He recalls taking his allowance as a child and heading from his Hespeler home to Hilltop Convenience to buy bags of candy.

"They had a huge candy counter," Stanhope said.

"The highlight would be spending my dollar allowance on mixed up candy, trying all the different stuff."

It was those memories and the encouragement of his wife, who owns an artisan market in nearby Paris, that inspired his new business: Speed River Snacks.

When Stanhope's wife expanded the products in her store to include candy, he began looking through the list of suppliers out of curiosity.

What he found amazed him.

"They had all these international treats," Stanhope said.

"We were talking about how it would be cool to try them but we don't know what anything is. It'd be cool if you could just do a mystery box and try different things. You don't know what you're getting, you like some of it, you don't like other things."

Not seeing anything around that reminded him of the old mystery bags he remembers as a kid, Stanhope decided to do it himself.

Mash potato black truffle Pringles, Spanish ham Pringles, canned bubble tea from Thailand and matcha cookies are just a few of the examples of items he's secured that residents wouldn't typically find on shelves in town.

His mystery boxes come in three prices; $30, $50 and $80. The cost is based on the number of snacks included and their price, with delivery right to customer's doorsteps in Cambridge, Kitchener and Waterloo.

He's also offering grab bags for birthday parties and celebrations.

Stanhope is a proud Cambridge resident. When not working the night shift at Toyota, he can be found on stage doing standup comedy around the region.

And now he hopes to bring smiles to the faces of his fellow residents through snacks.

"It's something fun," he said.

"A little bit of happiness right now. Candy has always helped people through hard times."

Stanhope is taking orders through the business' Facebook and Instagram pages @SpeedRiverSnacks.
