The Cambridge and District Humane Society has once again taken in an animal that was subjected to abuse.

In a recent social media post, the humane society said a team member was at a local park when they saw a group of kids "tossing and kicking" a young cat.

"One of our team members was at the park with their children when they saw something horrifying," the post read.

"A group of kids were tossing and kicking this young cat around. When approached the kids scattered and the cat laid on the ground in shock."

The team member tended to the cat and called animal services who transported her to the emergency veterinary hospital.

The cat, since named Pancake, was examined and no broken bones were discovered. She's currently being monitored for internal bleeding, the social media post said.

The news has caused outrage online, with the post garnering over 1,000 reactions, 177 shares and 168 comments.

"I hope these kids will be facing consequences!!! Poor defenceless baby. I hope she is doing well," one reply said.

"I’m sobbing reading this. I cannot believe anyone is capable of this kids or not I would have lost my absolute mind. I am so thankful Pancake is okay poor baby angel," read another.

When reached for comment, the Waterloo Regional Police Service said it didn't receive a report about the incident but pointed to sections 444 to 447 of the Criminal Code of Canada that outlines what laws exist to protect animals.

"Section 445(1) indicates anyone who willfully and without lawful excuse kills/wounds/maims can be charged with an indictable offence," Chris Iden, public information officer for WRPS, said in an email.

"We encourage anyone who witnesses anything like this to notify the police to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the animal."

The humane society wasn't able to be reached for comment by the time of publication.
