LETTER: Cambridge is in dire need of an overnight warming centre

Lives are at stake: Money and political will are essential from two levels of local government

CambridgeToday received the following letter about the need for an overnight warming centre.

To members of Cambridge city council and regional council:

Cambridge currently has no overnight warming centres for people who are homeless. With winter upon us, this leaves vulnerable residents at significant risk. Existing accessible shelter beds are over capacity, and, without immediate action, lives will be at stake.

Community organizations are ready to help make a warming centre a reality, but this requires funding and coordination from both Cambridge city council and regional council. Regional dollars are essential, as is political will, from both levels of government.

We urge the city to act quickly to allocate resources, work with regional and community partners and ensure a warming centre is established immediately. Lives depend on it.
