Royal Canadian Legion Branch 272 Hespeler presented the Cambridge Food Bank with $5,000 at a dinner held Friday night.

We want to donate back to the community and that’s the best way, especially this time of year,” said Bill Kalbhenn, veteran service officer at the Hespeler branch of the Royal Canadian Legion.

“The Legion is there for veterans, but it is also there for the community.”

Kalbhenn said the donation was made possible from the legion’s general funds account.

There were 155 people in attendance at the dinner, an event held twice a month at the Legion in Hespeler.

Dianne McLeod, executive director at the Cambridge Food Bank, says she is grateful for the donation.

“We are thankful for the generous donation made by the Hespeler Legion. More than 1,000 families have visited us in the first week of December for emergency food support. These are the numbers we would see over an entire month,” McLeod said.

“Donations like the one made by the Legion are vital to help us ensure that no one in our community goes hungry.”
