Environment Canada says heavy rainfall in excess of 50 mm is possible in Cambridge on Wednesday and Thursday as the remnants of Hurricane Beryl move through southwestern Ontario.

A special weather statement from the agency says torrential downpours giving rainfall rates of 20 to 40 mm per hour are possible at times. Localized rainfall totals could possibly be well in excess of 50 mm.

Rain is expected to begin late Tuesday night or Wednesday and continue into Thursday.

Although confidence in the exact track of the weather system is low, these types of systems in the past have given very high rainfall rates in torrential downpours, says Environment Canada.

Rainfall warnings may be issued as confidence in the track of the system increases.
