Grand River Transit (GRT) proudly marks 25 years of delivering reliable, sustainable and innovative transit services to the residents of Waterloo Region. Since its inception on Jan. 1, 2000, when Cambridge Transit and Kitchener Transit merged, GRT has played a crucial role in connecting communities, reducing environmental impacts and supporting the economic growth of the region.

GRT has grown a lot over the past quarter century. In 2000, GRT provided 345,000 hours of service; in 2024, that number was almost 840,000. Ridership has increased from 10 million to more than 26 million riders. GRT now has a fleet of 340 vehicles, 2,400 stops, and 50 routes that cover more than 16 million kilometres every year.

Highlights of GRT’s journey include the introduction of the first route connecting Cambridge, Kitchener and Waterloo in 2000; the launch of express service in 2003; expanding Woolwich Township service to Elmira in 2009; adding service to Wilmot Township in 2016; the launch of ION light rail in 2019; the introduction of electric buses in 2024; and ongoing improvements to accessibility and convenience for all riders.

“Grand River Transit has been a cornerstone of our community for 25 years, connecting people to work, school, and recreation while fostering sustainability and growth. This milestone is a testament to the dedication of GRT’s employees and the loyalty of our riders,” said Karen Redman, Chair of the Region of Waterloo.

To celebrate this milestone, GRT will share the stories of the people who make up the service, as well as moments and milestones, historical facts, Kitchener Transit and Cambridge Transit memorabilia and more. Stay tuned to GRT’s website and social media accounts (X, Instagram and Facebook) for details. GRT will also share the results of its Business Plan which will detail where GRT will take you next, with new coverage, better frequency and new tools to help you ride transit.
