Cambridge fire crews surround 58 Ainslie St. S. after a fire broke out in the empty building this afternoon.

Cambridge fire crews are on scene of a structure fire at 58 Ainslie St. S. this afternoon.

The stone building, located beside the Cambridge Food Bank, is empty and boarded up.

When smoke was spotted around 2:30 p.m., witnesses tried to gain access but couldn’t get in according to the fire crew on site.

There is no visible damage to the building and there are no injuries.

The former home was leased as a commercial property in 2019 and the windows boarded up in 2022. It is on the city's heritage register and was constructed around 1860.

The Cambridge Fire Department monitors vacant buildings regularly.

Last year, CFD told CambridgeToday there are more than 40 vacant buildings under their watch.

Crews will go around once a month to make sure the buildings have no visible entry points or damage that could pose further risk to the public.

More to come.
