Neuron Mobility e-scooters and e-bikes will be back on city streets this spring.

The Region of Waterloo has renewed its agreement with the company, marking the third straight year the mode of transportation will be available to residents.

Staff will also be requesting that the contract be renewable yearly until 2029 at a Sustainability, Infrastructure and Development Committee meeting next week.

According to a report heading before the committee, "the second year of operations of the program with Neuron Mobility is considered an overall success by the Shared Micromobility Project Team," despite the number of rides being down approximately 8.6 per cent in 2024.

Over 173,000 rides were taken across the region with a total of 288,000 kilometres travelled. Trips resulted in a reduction of 9.9 tonnes of carbon dioxide being emitted into the air.

The area in which scooters were permitted also drastically increased between Years 1 and 2, expanding from 39.55 square kilometres to 64.61.

In Cambridge, the pilot program was limited to Galt's core, a portion of west Galt and stretched north along Hespeler Road to Langs and Sheldon drives.

New this year will be a select number of accessible fleet options featuring two models of adaptive vehicles, including upright and handcycle tricycles designed for those with mobility impairments and disabilities.

The e-scooters and e-bikes will return to roadsides in April.
