Drop off changes and parking restrictions coming to Cambridge school zones

Council will be asked to approve the recommended changes next week

The city will seek council approval to make several minor adjustments to school zone parking and traffic rules in advance of the return to class in September.

The changes come at the request of Student Transportation Services of Waterloo Region (STSWR) and the schools and include:

  • School bus loading zone removals for Lincon Avenue Senior Public School and Central Public School.
  • School bus loading zone amendments for Preston Public School and Blair Public School.
  • “No Stopping” signage removal for St. Ambrose School.
  • “No Parking” restriction for Monsignor Doyle Catholic Secondary School.

Each year, STSWR conducts city-wide reviews to identify potential modifications to school traffic control, addressing concerns raised by local schools.

Any recommendations that come out of those reviews are forwarded to City of Cambridge Transportation Engineering staff for review and assistance with implementation.

A review of Preston Public School demonstrated the need for a different bus loading zone than what is in the by-law, so the plan is to use William Street instead of Westminster Drive.

Since Central Public School on Harris Street uses its own parking lot to drop off students, the current loading zone isn't required.

To accommodate additional buses at Blair Road Public School, STSWR requested the existing school bus loading zone be extended approximately 40 metres eastward on Sunset Boulevard.

STSWR requested the removal of “No Stopping” restriction on Elliott Street due to the permanent closure of St. Ambrose School and a “No Parking” restriction on Christopher Drive at Monsignor Doyle CSS. This was prompted due to buses experiencing turning radius limitations caused by parked vehicles on the roadway.
