Known for her sense of style and her fierce advocacy for women's rights, Ward 1 Councillor Donna Reid was honoured by her fellow councillors during Tuesday's meeting.
Reid, who served the residents of Ward 1 since 2010, died at Grand River Hospital on Sunday following a brief illness.
"Her absence around the horseshoe and in the halls at city hall will be felt," said Mayor Jan Liggett. "Anyone who knew Donna knew that she had strong beliefs and was a fierce advocate for those she felt needed her protection.
"I personally had a lot of respect for her strength and principles even when many times we were of differing opinions. She was the type of advocate everyone would only wish to have in their corner, fully facing any backlash that might come her way. She took it full on."
"She focused her life on social issues for which she made great change."
Tributes and condolences will be accepted for Reid through the end of the day Friday at City Hall where a celebration of life will be held in the Bowman Room from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Elected officials from across Ontario have sent messages of condolence to the mayor and members of council, sharing their own fond memories of working with Reid over the years.
She is remembered for her work in making Cambridge an Age Friendly City, supporting initiatives like free menstrual supplies in city facilities, the work of the Canadian Federation of University Women in Cambridge and advocating for equity, diversity and inclusion for all.
During Tuesday's meeting, in accordance with Section 262 (1) of the Municipal Act, 2001 (the Act), council formally declared a council vacancy and directed clerk Danielle Manton to provide a report on Aug. 29 on options to fill the Office of Councillor for Ward 1.
Everyone in the community is welcome at Friday's Celebration of Life for Councillor Reid.
Flags at city buildings will remain at half-mast in Reid’s honour until the conclusion of the Celebration of Life.
Books of condolence will also remain at City Hall until then for members of the public to express their condolences.
