Neighbours in the Pollock Avenue area are on high alert after two separate attacks by a large dog, one of which claimed the life of a small dog.
Posters can be seen on the corner of Pollock and Lincoln avenues in east Galt warning walkers against a "large and violent dog" that is known to escape its backyard.
"We've had to change our walking route, because of the recent attacks and don't want to risk anything," says Kryslin Blanchard, who posted a photo of the sign on Facebook to warn others who may be walking in the area with small children or pets.
She has known the owner of the dog for the past 20 years and adds this isn't the first aggressive dog they have owned.
"They had a bully kind of dog before that was aggressive, but this one is a Bernese mountain dog rottweiler mix. So it's a big dog," she says. "We live about 800 meters away from this house and we're pretty worried."
The first attack three months ago left a schnauzer with injuries so bad it had to be put down.
Blanchard notes the person who owned the dog that was attacked went through the proper channels and the owner of the offending dog was given a second chance by Cambridge Animal Control.
The Cambridge Humane Society did not respond to requests for comment on the situation.
Just last week the same dog attacked again, this time sending a person to the hospital.
"This last attack really shook people up and this is what prompted the concerned resident to post the signs warning others," Blanchard says.
"We just want to make sure that people know there is a dog that escapes the backyard frequently and could be dangerous."
