A new roundabout on the city's west side has set a high bar for design, but don't expect to see any more like it popping up around Cambridge.
Cambridge West subdivision developer Hallman and Cachet collaborated with the city on the project and paid Thomas Custom Masonry to create the monument in the centre of the traffic circle on the recently reopened Blenheim Road.
The city says the ornate stone bridge, tower and flying heron sculpture featured in the centre of the roundabout is unique and not a new standard for city owned roundabouts.
MacNaughton Hermsen Britton Clarkson planning consultants came up with the design and led the consultation with local residents, city staff and councillors back in 2019.
The design is a nod toward natural environments found throughout Cambridge, rural and architectural character, and the Grand and Speed Rivers which flow through Cambridge.
Work continues in the 90 hectare subdivision that will feature two public parks, a school and several blocks of low density residential development.
