The City of Cambridge is offering eligible property owners up to $10,000 as part of the new Financial Assistance Program for Additional Residential Units (ARUs).

An ARU, is a self-contained living space, such as a basement apartment or in-law suite, located on the same property as a primary residence. These units can be a great way to create more affordable housing options and make better use of existing space.

The program is part of a Community Improvement Plan (CIP) aimed at encouraging the development of legal ARUs across the city to help cover costs associated with:

  • Upgrading sanitary and water services
  • Preparing professional permit drawings
  • Hard construction costs, such as labor and materials

This program is made possible by the Federal Governments Housing Accelerator Fund (HAF) Program and is a key step toward increasing affordable housing options in Cambridge.

“The federal government has been working with municipalities across the country to incentivize the construction of more housing through the Housing Accelerator Fund,” said Bryan May, Member of Parliament for the City of Cambridge. “The City of Cambridge has been a supportive partner in this important work, and our collaboration will continue to make housing more affordable for those who need it the most in our city.”

This Financial Assistance Program aligns with the City’s Strategic Plan - Cambridge Connected and its commitment to increasing housing options and supporting a growing community. By offsetting construction costs such as permit drawings and construction, the City is making it easier for homeowners to create ARUs, expanding affordable housing options and improving overall quality of life.

Applications are now being accepted. For more information about the program and how to apply, please visit cambridge.ca/aru
