Chances looking good for 'white Christmas' in Waterloo Region

According to Environment Canada

Waterloo Region could be in for a 'white Christmas'

There's some snow on the ground right now, but will it stick around for the holidays?

Steven Flisfeder is a Warning Preparedness Meteorologist with Environment Canada.

He said Dec. 25 is still two weeks away, so a lot can happen between now and then.

While there's no definitive forecast as of yet, it's seeming like we could see a 'white Christmas' after all.

"We did get some snowfall yesterday, and looking at the next week or so -- we're looking at more chances for more snow to fall on the region," said Flisfeder. "Given that, and that temperatures are starting to be consistently near or below zero even during the daytime... the chances of seeing snow on the morning of December 25 are pretty good at this point."

He added that when combing through historical data from 1955 to 2021, it shows there's a 69 per cent of snow on the ground on Christmas Day. If you narrow it down further though to 1997 to 2021, the chance drops to about 60 per cent.

"It's a little more relevant looking at recent years. We're seeing global trends of warmer temperatures which reduce the likelihoods," explained Fisfeder.

He said we'll have a better picture of this year's Christmas forecast starting December 19.
