The Cambridge Fire Department and the Waterloo Regional Police Service say they are currently looking into the cause of a fire that destroyed a historic farmhouse located at 1395 Main Street in Cambridge on Sunday.

The farmhouse, built in the mid-1800s and a registered heritage building, was located in the middle of what will soon be the 419-unit Moffat Creek subdivision located just east of Wesley Boulevard. At the time of the fire the building was set on a large skid in preparation to be moved roughly 300 yards north of its current location.

Once relocated, the developer was planning on transforming it into a luxury home.

Fire crews and police were called to the location at 4 a.m. after a nearby resident reported hearing a loud noise described as an “explosion."

The investigation is ongoing.
