Cambridge student medals at Skills Canada National Competition

The Skills Canada National Competition was held in Winnipeg at the end of May.

Two Monsignor Doyle Catholic Secondary School students showed well at the recent Skills Canada National Competition as members of Team Ontario, with one bringing home a silver medal.

Luke De Sousa won the medal in the Secondary Cabinetmaking contest. 

De Sousa showcased his talent with the safe operation of woodworking machines, portable power tools and hand tools.

The competitors were asked to use provided drawings to demonstrate their hard work, machining skills, and sanding and assembly techniques to complete a project that was up to professional standards.

"Luke’s focus and passion over the two-day competition was unmatched," the WCDSB said in a release.

Grace Nakazi was the other Monsignor Doyle student taking part in the competition.

As part of Day 1 of the Secondary Public Speaking Contest, she answered the question “How can people be enticed to enter skilled trades and technology careers?”

On Day 2 she did an impromptu speech that with only two minutes of preparation time and three minutes to deliver it.

Nakazi finished sixth overall.

The event was held May 24 to 27 at the RBC Convention Center in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
