After months of planning the Cambridge Sports Hall of Fame has officially moved into its new location inside the Cambridge Centre mall.
Residents won’t have to go far to see the vast history of local sports icons and stories, as the new shrine is just down the hall from its previous location outside the skating rink and food court in the old Rogers storefront.
Hall of Fame committee member John Rothwell says the move was quite extensive but he’s happy with the way the new location has come together.
“You can imagine the enormity of moving some of these big cases,” Rothwell said of the displays.
“I’m impressed with the amount of foot traffic here in this area, I didn’t realize there was so much. There will be a lot of people that will come in.”
The new location has opened up just in time for the hall’s annual induction ceremony.
The 2023 class features eight inductees.
Hockey player Bryan Little, mother and daughter distance runners Leslie and Lindsay Carson and cyclist Leigh Hobson are the four athletes being inducted.
In the builders category, Cambridge Aquajets coach Ron Campbell, along with a joint induction of Ernie Overland and Marg Oliveira, who have been key members of the Cambridge speed skating club for over four decades, will be honoured.
The 2018 Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations Sr. football champion Jacob Hespeler Hawks and the 2019 13U Cambridge Cubs "AAA" national champions will be enshrined as a team.
“The nice part about this move is the big open space out front for our induction ceremony,” Rothwell said.
“We had a big space down there but this is even bigger.”
The 2023 induction ceremony takes place May 6 at 1 p.m. out front of the hall of fame.
