The Cambridge Humane Society is running its annual lottery to assist with the care of its animals.

For those feeling lucky and looking to support a good cause, the Cambridge Humane Society has a fundraiser.

The For the Love of Animals lottery is back this holiday season as the shelter aims to raise funds for the care of its animals.

With operating costs often exceeding $100,000 annually, fundraisers like the lottery are critical to sustainability.

The humane society is also grappling with capacity and length of stay issues. As a not-for-profit, it relies heavily on donations and public support to deal with the demand.

Currently, the humane society has six dogs and 13 cats ready for adoption on its website.

"Every animal that comes in gets a full assessment and everything it needs," Michelle Gellatly, executive director of the Cambridge Humane Society said last month prior to its Howl-o-ween event.

"Funds raised go directly into medical and animal care."

An early bird draw for the lottery will be held on Dec. 22 where $2,500 is going to be given away. Beginning Jan. 1, $400 can be won daily and $1,250 every Friday leading up to the grand prize draw of $5,000 on Jan. 31.

Tickets are $15 and can be purchased throughout the city at participating retailers, pet stores and veterinarians.
