A Cambridge cultural centre has donated more than 1,200 backpacks to the Waterloo Regional Police Service's Backpack Challenge, more than tripling its contribution to last year's effort and becoming one of the most significant contributions to the campaign so far.

The WRPS's annual Backpack Challenge collects backpacks and school supplies to distribute to children in need before the start of school.

This summer, the Radha Krishna Mandir and Cultural Centre in Blair rose to the challenge again with the simple goal of matching last year's donation of 325 backpacks.

The RKMCC Outreach Group heard police chief Mark Crowell's plea for more support and decided to intensify their ask, said outreach coordinator Prakash Narine.

"Our community has responded well to this," he said in a press release.

The RKMCC Outreach Group handed over the backpacks on Thursday at the Radha Krishna Mandir 67 Old Mill Road.

The Outreach Group would like to thank all well wishers who donated towards this campaign and the WRPS for the opportunity to partner with them for the Backpack Challenge.

RKMCC Outreach would also like to invite well wishers to join them as they prepare for their next community outreach in the fall to coincide with Diwali (Festival of Lights).
