REGION OF WATERLOO

Grassroots groups looking to grow their upstream work can now apply for Regional funding. Applications are open for the Upstream Fund and Community Capacity Building Fund.

“This funding plays a crucial role in supporting groups that provide youth and adults with access to education, career opportunities, and inclusive spaces and services that foster a sense of belonging,” says Regional Chair Karen Redman. “By investing in these initiatives, we help strengthen the community and create more equitable opportunities for all.”

The Region has supported 116 projects through the upstream fund since it began. In their yearbook, groups who received funding say it has led to positive change.

“As a result of the funding, we were able to equip young people with the skills required to launch their own businesses,” says HOPE for Community Development, who received funding in 2022.

“For many of the people we serve, our peer activities program is their only social interaction,” says Independent Living Waterloo Region, a recipient from 2022. “Many have said that it is lifesaving, keeping them from excessive negative mental health.”

“These organizations are doing great things in the face of barriers. We are honoured to be able to contribute to that effort and growth,” says Fauzia Baig. Fauzia is the Region’s Director of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion at the Region of Waterloo.

The application process is simpler than most funds. Interpreters are on hand and sessions will be held to answer questions about the process. Visit the Upstream Fund events page at www.upstreamwr.ca to learn more and to apply.

Applications will be accepted until April 28. A committee led by the community will determine the recipients. Decisions will align with the priorities in the Community Safety and Wellbeing plan. These include improving mental health, combating hate, creating safe spaces, and addressing gender-based violence and Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women.
