Rain or shine, a small group of seniors makes it a point to hit the trails a couple times a week.

As part of the City of Cambridge 50+ annual membership, those interested in exploring a local trail, while meeting new people, can join the walking group.

"The walking group provides a way to be active and to socialize. Other benefits of walking is that it lowers blood pressure, improves health and immerses people in nature," said Lisa Whelan, supervisor of recreation for older adult services and community development, recreation and culture, at the City of Cambridge.

"The group always meets up for coffee after every walk, and once a month, the group meets for breakfast."

With it's network of river trails, it's not surprising that Cambridge has a number of walking groups.

This particular bunch has been active for over 30 years and explores trails throughout Cambridge, Puslinch, North Dumfries and Kitchener.

"Walkers meet at the Allan Reuter Centre every Tuesday and dress for all kinds of weather. If the weather is really bad, the group will choose a safer route with more sidewalks and less trails," Whelan said.

"The group prefers to walk in the woods and not on sidewalks if possible. They meet on Tuesdays at 8:45 a.m. and depart for their walk by 9 a.m."

There is also a group that walks from the David Durward Centre on Mondays and Wednesdays starting at 9:30 a.m.

A volunteer convener plans the routes for about 5-10 weekly walkers.

Whelan says participants need to be able to drive to various locations and be ready for an active, sometimes strenuous one to two hour hike.

Fifty-plus is committed to helping older adults in the community to remain healthy and age with dignity with initiatives that work toward social participation and wellness.

"The group enjoys socializing, and while walking, they are surprised at how quick the pace can be.  The fastest walker in the group,  is over 80 years of age. Some group members have commented that they have walked on trails for the first time with the group, on trails that they did not know existed," Whelan said.

"It’s a great way to meet people who share the same interest.  It also gives people the opportunity to learn about local trails they have never walked before."

Fifty-plus recreation xentres offer a variety of great activities for active older adults. Whether they are looking to get fit, learn a new instrument or art form, expand their knowledge, or enjoy a friendly game of cards, there is something for everyone.

The City of Cambridge 50+ Annual Membership is $38.86 + tax a year. A 50+ day pass is $2.13 for the winter session.

"It’s a chance to have fun, share laughs and get some exercise in nature," Whelan said.

"Come walk with us and make some new friends while enjoying the great outdoors."
