Jayne Herring
Why are you running for school board trustee?
I am running for re-election because I am a strong supporter and believe in Public Education. During my previous term I participated in the development of our new
Strategic Plan and I recently served a motion on free public transportation for students and I would like to be at the board table to participate in the discussion and see these initiatives in action!
What do you think the role of a school board trustee is, and what attributes do you have to offer?
Trustees are champions of public education and are responsible for student achievement and well-being of students. I retired from the Board as the Manager of Corporate Services after 31 years with the WRDSB in 2017. I am pleased to be able to put my knowledge and skills of the Education system and the WRDSB to serve the students and families of Cambridge and North Dumfries.
As you look at education in the years ahead, what do you think are the most important issues?
Mental health for staff and students continues to be a concern and additional funding and programs are needed. Student Achievement is a top priority and we must make sure that our students have everything they need to continue to achieve. Recently we received 10,000 responses to our Strategic Plan survey, but continued stakeholder engagement must be a priority.
There were many in the community who had witnessed difficult relations within WRDSB this past year. What will you do differently to help heal and move forward?
My hope is that once the legal challenges are resolved that the elected members of the board can treat each other with respect and abide by the Code of Conduct that each person swears an oath to follow.
