n the heart of Waterloo Region in Ontario, a remarkable organization is making strides to ensure every student has access to nutritious food while at school. In partnership with youth and educators, Nutrition for Learning strives to elevate the experience of universal food access at schools in ways that promote optimal wellbeing, healthy relationships, and food literacy.
Despite Canada's prosperity, there is a surprising number of students that go to school without having anything to eat. According to Food Banks Canada, one in six Canadian children under the age of 18 lives in a food-insecure household. This means they lack reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food. This startling statistic underscores the critical need for student programs like Nutrition for Learning in our local communities.
Nutrition for Learning offers universal access to nutritious food in schools across Waterloo Region. What is universal access? It means the food and program are available to ANY student who wants it without having to prove a need. Currently, Nutrition for Learning has programs in 177 schools across Waterloo Region.
Erin Moraghan, Chief Executive Officer, says, "I believe student nutrition programs are about so much more than bridging hunger gaps, even now during an affordability crisis. Programs like Nutrition for Learning and so many others across the country play an integral role in establishing equitable school experiences and improving overall community health. A recent study shows that for every dollar spent on school food, the return on investment is up to seven times that in terms of increased population health and the economic equity it leads to. Why not level the playing-field for young people in this simple way, while improving the health and vibrancy of the next generations?"
