A fatal collision involving a detached wheel from a van, which struck a SUV, closed Highway 401 eastbound in Cambridge for several hours this afternoon.

On Oct. 30, at approximately 1:55 p.m., the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Cambridge Detachment, received numerous calls reporting a serious collision involving a transport truck and a SUV on Highway 401 eastbound, east of Townline Road, Cambridge.

The driver of the SUV, a 39-year-old, from Toronto, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

All eastbound lanes were closed for investigation at Townline Road, and members of the OPP Highway Safety Division (HSD) Traffic Support Unit (TSU) attended to assist with the investigation. It was confirmed by investigators that a wheel had become detached from a van travelling westbound, which struck the SUV travelling eastbound, which then made contact with the transport truck.

The investigation is ongoing, and officials are asking for witnesses who may have seen the incident, or may have dashcam footage, to call the OPP Cambridge Detachment at 1-888-310-1122 and refer to incident number E241452262.
