All over Waterloo region, police have been handing out free backpacks to families to prepare for the upcoming school year.
WRPS along with chief of police, Mark Crowell stopped by the Greenway Chaplin Community Centre at 116 Rouse Ave. to meet with families and give away dozens of bags.
Over the past month, police launched their sixth annual backpack challenge; encouraging residents to purchase new backpacks, lunch bags, school supplies, or gift cards to be donated to children and families in need.
"With an increase in demand for support for families throughout Waterloo Region, we’re launching our Backpack Challenge earlier than ever this year to ensure those who need support, get support," said WRPS in a press release.
More than 10,000 backpacks have been collected over the past five years, along with thousands of dollars in gift cards and school supplies.
All of the items have been donated to youth organizations and children in Waterloo Region to ensure they have an exciting back-to-school experience and are prepared for the year ahead.
“Heading back to class is an exciting time for many and the Backpack Challenge helps to ensure that families in need have one less thing to worry about,” said Mark Crowell, Chief of Police. “We are grateful for all those who have donated in the past and look forward to once again taking part in a campaign that helps send children back to the classroom with a smile.”
WRPS will be at the Greenway Chaplin Community Centre until 11:30 a.m. on Aug. 23 with more dates popping up throughout Cambridge and Waterloo region.
