The City of Cambridge shared progress on the expansion and renovation of the Preston Auditorium on Wednesday, marking a significant milestone in the project as site preparation work nears completion and construction can begin on the expansion.
“This is a watershed moment for Cambridge, creating another space for our community to provide a wide variety of recreation opportunities to residents of all ages,” said Mayor Jan Liggett in a press release. “Access to recreation opportunities is so important to the health and wellbeing of our residents.”
The $33M project to renovate and expand the auditorium follows extensive public consultation and planning with the community over the years.
Once complete, the newly-renovated facility will boast a new NHL-size ice pad along with new seating, change rooms, accessible washrooms, and office space.
As part of the renovation the existing change rooms and ice pad will also see improvements.
In September 2023, council approved key components of the city's 2024-2026 Strategic Plan. The Preston Auditorium development progresses the strategic action to create and activate spaces that offer things for people to do, the city says.
On Nov. 28, 2023, council awarded the contract to expand and renovate the auditorium to Ball Construction Ltd of Kitchener.
The facility is anticipated to be complete in fall 2025.
