Several Downtown Cambridge streets remain closed after two officers were stabbed and two other officers were also injured late Saturday morning.
Waterloo Regional Police report that at around 10:50 a.m., police responded to a report of a collision involving a single motor vehicle in the area of Simcoe Street and Ainslie Street North.
Upon arrival, officers observed the male driver acting erratically.
"An altercation ensued while attempting to arrest the man. During the arrest, two officers suffered stab wounds," WRPS said in a news release late Saturday afternoon.
Police were able to deploy a Conducted Energy Weapon, and the man was taken into custody.
One of the injured officers was transported to a local hospital, while the other officer was transported to an out-of-region hospital, both with serious injuries.
Two other officers suffered minor injuries after the man attempted to stab an officer and bit another.
The suspect's dog was shot by police when it became aggressive during the arrest. The dog received veterinary care and is expected to survive.
A 26-year-old Cambridge man has been charged with several criminal offences, including:
- Two counts of aggravated assault
- Four counts of assault with a weapon
- Two counts of possession of weapons for a dangerous purpose
- Resist arrest
- Assault
- Dangerous driving
- Seven counts of breach of release orders
The accused was transported to a local hospital to be assessed.
The investigation is ongoing by members of the Waterloo Regional Police Service's General Investigations Unit.
