After a three-year wait, the Shell gas station on King Street East finally has an opening date.

The gas hasn’t started flowing out of any nozzles just yet, but the Shell station at 406 King St. E. is set to open in the coming weeks.

Originally applied for in 2019, the proposed renovation of the gas station and convenience store added an A&W drive thru where a Vietnamese pho restaurant once stood. Those plans were soon quashed, however, due to problems getting approvals for the drive thru.

Since then, the business owners changed their plans and will now open a shawarma restaurant at a later date.

“We are happy to finally be opening in the next two weeks,” said Virena Behere, executive assistant at Aurora Group.

In a press release issued last fall, Aurora Group said construction should be completed in November 2021, but trying to get the correct permits from the City of Cambridge put the development behind by close to a year, said Behere.

Now that everything has been cleared with the city, the owners have begun taking the additional steps to setting up the inside of the convenience store and exterior signage.
