Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB) trustee Joanne Weston will run for the New Democrats in the riding of Kitchener South—Hespeler in June's provincial election.

Weston was welcomed Monday by NDP MPP and Finance critic Catherine Fife (Waterloo), NDP MPP Laura Mae Lindo (Kitchener Centre), NDP candidate for Cambridge Marjorie Knight and NDP candidate for Kitchener—Conestoga Karen Meissner.

Weston will be acclaimed as the NDP’s Kitchener South—Hespeler candidate at a meeting on Feb. 12.

“I am thrilled to welcome Joanne to our NDP team here in the Waterloo Region. Joanne is a strong advocate for families and a high-quality public education system. As a former small business owner, she also understands the challenges local businesses are facing as they try to bounce back from this pandemic. With Joanne on our team, we will invest in education, rebuild and improve health care, build a public and community based home care and long-term care system, and make life affordable again for the families of Kitchener South—Hespeler," said provincial NDP leader Andrea Horwath in a news release.

“I’m dedicated to standing up for the families of Kitchener South—Hespeler. I’ve heard the concerns of families in our community and I know life is getting harder for many. As a trustee, I advocate for families and students in my community every day. As an MPP, I will make sure we invest in the things that make life easier, like safer and smaller classrooms, better health care, public and responsive home care, dignified long-term care and making it easier to afford a home. I am proud to be joining Andrea Horwath and the NDP, together we’re going to make life better for the residents of Kitchener South—Hespeler," Weston stated.

Weston has lived, worked and raised her family in Waterloo Region for more than 25 years.
