Rhythm & Blues Cambridge will host an International Day Of The Girl celebration, teaching the next generation how to love the skin they're in.

The event will take place on Oct. 11 at the Cambridge Centre For The Arts in the Toyota Room from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and is free to attend.

"This event will feature a conversation about growing up Black and racialized in Ontario," wrote Rhythm & Blues Cambridge in a press release.

Highlights include a celebrity guest speaker, empowering discussions, an interactive question-and-answer period along with an interactive movement therapy session.

Rhythm & Blues is a grassroots, Black women-led organization that has made it their mission to reach the younger community and teach them history about their culture and how to be comfortable being yourself.

From conversations about mental health to speaking about how history is more than what you read in books at school, the local organization looks to prop up the local Black community.

"Our programs centre black joy, resistance, healing and belonging allowing us to take pride in our heritage. Through our Black History Month events, Black Girl Excellence program, Art From the Heart processing workshops and summer camps, we engage with our community through healing, empowerment and celebration," wrote the organization.

In 2011, Canada motioned to the United Nations General Assembly with an order to declare October 11 as International Day of the Girl Child to recognize girls' rights and the unique challenges they face around the world.

International Day of the Girl Child focuses attention on the need to address the challenges girls face and to promote female empowerment and the fulfillment of their human rights.
