There could be some delays getting across the Concession Street bridge in downtown Galt this summer.
Work to replace the busted watermain on the north side of the bridge with a new main on the south side of the bridge begins Tuesday and the work is expected to last until October.
The bridge will remain open to vehicle and pedestrian traffic while construction is completed.
Short-term travel lane closures and traffic control with flag persons are planned for the summer. Signs will be posted in advance of lane closures or detours.
The $1.58 million project has been several years in the making after the original watermain attached to the side of the bridge was destroyed by chunks of ice when the river swelled during an ice jam in February 2018.
In the five years since, water supply has been maintained using redundant mains in the city-owned system.
The region had planned to bore a tunnel under the river for the new watermain, but that planned was scrapped last year after it proved too costly.
Installing the watermain on the south side of the bridge should protect it from any future ice jams.
