The first three letters in the new Preston town centre sign were snapped or cut from the concrete top in an act of vandalism over the weekend.

The Region of Waterloo says it will investigate the extent of damage and repair the newly-installed Preston Town Centre sign on King Street East in front of the LCBO store after it was vandalized over the weekend.

Someone snapped or cut the first three letters of the three-dimensional metal 'PRESTON' sign from the concrete and stone plinth it rests on.

The City of Cambridge installed the signs at either end of the Preston core in May as part of ongoing reconstruction of King Street through town.

The city confirmed Wednesday the region will investigate and repair the sign but didn't have a timeline as for when that might happen.

Waterloo regional police could not immediately confirm if they'd been asked to investigate the incident or whether security footage from the LCBO might include the sign.

The sign at the west end of town is undamaged.
