Region reports two new COVID-related deaths Thursday

Region of Waterloo Public Health confirmed two new COVID-related deaths on Thursday. It puts the local death toll at 405.

Hospitalizations have decreased by seven to 47. Five patients are in intensive care, which is one less that what was reported on the region's dashboard Wednesday.

Health officials are also reporting 145 new COVID-19 cases, raising the local total to 43,842. The resolved case rate is 92.6 per cent.

The active caseload is up to 1,217.

In terms of variants of concern, the region's dashboard shows 575 of those cases (94.3 per cent) have been linked to the Omicron variant since March 13.

85.9 per cent of residents five and over in Waterloo Region are now fully vaccinated. Over 1.30 million doses have been administered to local residents, including over 295,000 third doses. 50.8 per cent of those 12 and over have received a third dose.

54.7 per cent of children between 5 and 11 have received at least one dose. 40.1 are fully vaccinated.

Meanwhile, the province reported 4,589 new cases Thursday.

  • 1,392 COVID-positive patients in hospitals, up from 1,332 reported yesterday. 177 people are in ICU because of COVID-related critical illness, which is down from 182 reported yesterday.
