Region of Waterloo council has officially approved two new roundabouts on Roseville Road to reduce traffic and improve driver safety.
With construction slated for 2025, the two roundabouts will affect hundreds of Cambridge drivers every day.
The roundabouts will replace traffic lights on Roseville Road at Dickie Settlement and Edworthy Side Road.
In an earlier report the region said a roundabout is preferable for the rural intersection, currently served by temporary traffic signals, because it "provides a superior level of service, fewer serious collisions and fatalities, and generates fewer green house gas emissions than a traffic signal."
There was a 30-day public consultation period where residents were looking forward to the benefits from reduced speeds approaching and entering the roundabout and improved traffic flow through the intersection.
"The roundabout, including the entrance and exit to the roundabout, will be designed geometrically to accommodate all users," wrote the region in a Aug. 15 report to council.
The proposed roundabout will have lower lifecycle costs and reduce idling times, which will result in fuel savings and reduced vehicle
emissions and will support the Region’s climate goals.
Construction for both roundabouts will run the region an approximate $1.8 million each over the next three years.
