REGION OF WATERLOO

The Region of Waterloo has purchased a strategic parcel of land in Woolwich, unlocking opportunity for a potential future GO Station site and new mixed-use development including affordable housing. This new parcel is a milestone investment in Breslau and will help ensure that the Region plans intentionally as we quickly grow to one million people.
The site is located along Fountain Street, adjacent to the recently upgraded rail line and is ideally situated for transit-oriented, medium and high-density affordable housing and neighbourhood amenities. It will connect to Waterloo Region’s existing and expanding world-class transit system and provide new transit options to the Region of Waterloo International Airport (YKF).
“The Region is committed to a sustainable, intentional future. We are doing this though major community building projects that will encourage further development by private partners, organizations and community members,” said Karen Redman, Regional Chair. “We’re looking forward to working alongside our colleagues in Woolwich, our local MP and MPP, other levels of government, as well as Metrolinx, to bring this emerging neighbourhood and important transit infrastructure to life.”
“We are proud of our commitment to managed and sustainable growth and are excited to see this strategic project take shape as we plan out the long-term vision for Breslau,” said Sandy Shantz, Mayor of Woolwich Township. “Woolwich is projected to grow by almost 50% by 2050, and we must make innovative planning decisions now to create the homes, jobs, connectivity, amenities and services that will be needed for this growing community to flourish and thrive.”
“I am extremely pleased that the Region and Township are working with our Federal partners, the Province and Metrolinx in going ahead with this crucial transit infrastructure and housing development right here in Breslau,” said the Honourable Mike Harris, Minister of Red Tape Reduction and Member of Provincial Parliament for Kitchener-Conestoga. “Increasing transportation and housing options for residents of Waterloo Region will support the growth our community needs, opening more opportunities and access for work, education and recreation.”
”I firmly believe in all levels of government supporting affordable housing and public transit, which are crucial for our community’s well-being. Reliable public transit offers numerous benefits, such as reducing traffic congestion, improving air quality, and enhancing accessibility. For busy commutes for work, study or travel, people rely on efficient public transit. Affordable housing close to dependable transit systems contributes to a healthier, more sustainable, and vibrant Kitchener-Conestoga,” said Tim Louis, Member of Parliament for Kitchener-Conestoga.
This purchase aligns with the priorities set out within The Region of Waterloo’s “Growing with Care” Strategic Plan including a strategic focus on Homes for All and Climate Aligned Growth. The Region remains committed to creating integrated, future-focused, inclusive and sustainable neighbourhoods as we grow to 1 million residents.
Further information will be provided as planning for the site begins.
