Exterior renovations at the Preston Idea Exchange wrapped up last week.
Work began in September to make the building more accessible and improve the building's esthetics. Visitors can now access library parking and the front entrance book return.
The $376,800 project included installation of a new ramp and doors to meet current accessibility standards, new windows and the replacement of dated building materials on the exterior walls.
“Our staff are thrilled to once again welcome the community through the main doors of our Preston location with the completion of this project,” said Chrissy Hodgins, Idea Exchange CEO in an emailed statment.
“The project has improved access for all visitors and rejuvenated the exterior features of the building, so the library and gallery may continue to be a highlight of the Preston Towne Centre.”
The Preston library was last renovated over 20 years ago when it underwent a major interior redesign.
Since then, wear and tear on its exterior wooden slat walls and ceramic tile became more apparent.
The project, which was originally budgeted at $181,800, ballooned in price after it was put to tender in September 2022.
The Idea Exchange received $135,000 from the Federal government's Canada Community Revitalization Fund to support the project.
Despite the grant covering a majority of the increased scope of the project, three bids were received and all were significantly over budget.
