A major funding boost for Waterloo Regional Police Service.
The Ontario government has announced an almost $1.8-million investment to help the service fight crime, including auto theft.
Police will use the money, which totals $1,794,329.00, to enhance use of Automated Licence Plate Recognition technology on roadways.
The province said the technology will alert officers to stolen or expired plates, suspended drivers, missing or wanted people, and vehicles associated with AMBER alerts.
"We are grateful for the funding announced today, which will allow WRPS to expand our use of ALPR technology to more of our front line resources, supporting their efforts in traffic and public safety," said WRPS Chief Mark Crowell in a press release.
"This investment will further our Service's commitment to continued modernization and operational excellence."
