UPDATE Police close Mercer Road in Cambridge to make arrest for September sexual assault

Armed with rifles and riot gear, police close down Cambridge street to make arrest in connection to a sexual assault investigation

Waterloo Regional Police closed off Mercer Road to deal with a police investigation.

Mercer Road between Samuelson Street and Bronson Avenue was closed while WRPS conducted an investigation.

"Police responded to a residence on Mercer Road in Cambridge in regards to a sexual assault incident from September 2024," said WRPS communications officer Chris Iden in an email to CambridgeToday.

On Sept. 13, at around 11:30 p.m., police received a report of a sexual assault in the area of Water Street North and Samuelson Street.

The female was walking on Water Street North just north of Samuelson Street when she was approached by an unknown male who sexually assaulted her.

Police say a 37-year-old man was arrested this afternoon and charged with sexual assault, criminal harassment, and assault. He was taken into custody for a bail hearing and there were no reports of any physical injuries or weapons.

"There were no other individuals in the residence at the time of the incident, and the individual cooperated with officers upon arrival. The road was shut down temporarily but has been reopened," wrote Iden.

Officers on the scene were armed with rifles and riot shields as they waited for an individual to leave their home.

According to neighbour, Bill Walker who lives two doors down, seeing police on the street is not uncommon.

"They were here two weeks ago. If he should have been incarcerated, it should have been then," said Walker.

"Let's hope they can fix the issue and they won't be back again in two weeks."

During the arrest WRPS closed the road and posted to social media saying "there is currently no threat to public safety, however, there is an increased police presence in the area."

They also asked that residents avoid the area and find an alternate route.

The road has since been reopened.
