The result on the ice Saturday night may not have been what the Cambridge RedHawks wanted but the impact that was made off it sure was.
RedHawks players wore special pink jerseys against the Elmira Sugar Kings for its Pink in the Rink game in support of the Canadian Cancer Society.
Through the auctioning off of the jerseys and donations collected, the team was able to raise $5,180 for cancer research.
"The night was a success," team president Rob McIntosh said.
"The players embraced the theme of the night. They all have been impacted by cancer in some way and with the signs they had on the ice with them for the opening ceremonies, they were all playing for someone special Saturday night."
On the ice, it was the Sugar Kings who secured a 6-5 win in a shootout in front of 602 fans.
David Bodzai scored a pair of goals for the home side, while Will Bray, Ezra Fischer and Owen Yagar also found the back of the net. Lennart Neisse stopped 40 of 45 shots in goal.
But the final score was secondary to the much more important cause.
"All of the players stayed well after the game in the alumni box area to meet and greet fans and sign their jerseys, as well as anything else fans brought with them," McIntosh said.
"A lot of smiles despite the tough loss."
A representative will be on hand at the RedHawks game on Oct. 19 versus the Fort Erie Meteors for a ceremonial puck drop and to receive the donation.
Cambridge returns to action on Thursday with a game in Ayr against the Centennials before returning to Galt Arena Gardens on Saturday to host the Port Colborne Sailors.
