Our Best Stories of '24: #8 Making the most of a bad situation

The size of the homelessness crisis was near the top of everyone's mind in 2024 as the devastating impact of mental health, addiction became more visible than ever in our community.

Last spring, CambridgeToday sought to put a face to some of the people living in encampments and resident Brian Kitchen was happy to oblige.

Kitchen reflected on his experience as he sat in a self-made shelter on a property off Samuelson Street in Galt that later became a focus for city efforts to address issues of public safety and its wider impact on the community.

Kitchen toured reporter Matt Betts around the makeshift shack he built on the vacant property, equipped with a tv, antenna, couches and a bedroom.

The encampment grew so large it could be seen from the Dundas Street bridge overhead.

Kitchen told us the story of how he ended up homeless and how he was using any resources he could find to provide shelter.
