The installation of a new, one-and-a-half-kilometre watermain along Avenue Road, between Hespeler Road and Franklin Boulevard this summer will create a new pressure zone in the city’s drinking water distribution system.

The region is expected to award a $3.17 million contract to Musselman Excavating Ltd., part of which includes milling and repaving the existing asphalt surface for the City of Cambridge.

Since Avenue Road is owned by the city, the city’s portion of the work is included in the contract at $309,143.

The work includes constructing and connecting a 1.5 km watermain, and full depth road restoration of the eastbound lane.

The region’s 2022 water services capital program includes $9.8 million in water distribution upgrades for Cambridge, almost half of which was budgeted for the Avenue Road watermain.

During construction, Avenue Road will be open one-way for westbound traffic only, closed to eastbound traffic with detours for eastbound traffic, with shorter term full closures for surface asphalt paving.

The region says residents and business owners along Avenue Road will be notified via letters in advance of construction and updated during construction.

Contact information will be provided for follow-up questions and communication.

Signs with the estimated construction duration and contact information will be placed at both ends of the construction zone.

Detours will be posted when lane and road closures are in effect. Members of the public may obtain up-to-date information about active, ongoing construction contracts affecting Regional roads on the Region’s website.
