New COVID-related death reported in region Wednesday

Region of Waterloo Public Health reported a new COVID-related death on Wednesday afternoon. It raises the local death toll to 406.

Hospitalizations also increased by four to 58. Seven patients remain in intensive care.

The health department also confirmed 72 new cases, putting the overall total at 44,305. The resolved case rate is 96.7 per cent.

The active caseload is 1,019.

Health officials also pointed out Wednesday's numbers are once again under-counted. It is due to a provincial data transfer issue, which impacted case counts on April 17 and April 18 as well. 

In terms of variants of concern, the region's dashboard shows 575 of those cases (94.3 per cent) have been linked to the Omicron variant since March 13.

85.9 per cent of residents five and over in Waterloo Region are now fully vaccinated. Over 1.30 million doses have been administered to local residents, including over 295,000 third doses. 50.8 per cent of those 12 and over have received a third dose.

54.7 per cent of children between 5 and 11 have received at least one dose. 40.1 are fully vaccinated.

Meanwhile, the province reported 1,073 new cases Wednesday.

  • 1,662 COVID-positive patients in hospitals, up from 1,486 reported yesterday. 203 people are in ICU because of COVID-related critical illness, which is down from 206 reported yesterday.
