On Thursday, New Democrats in Cambridge chose José de Lima as their NDP candidate in the next federal election.

“I’m thrilled to have José joining the team. He brings a great deal of experience representing people in his community and fighting to get them better services and treatment,” said NDP leader Jagmeet Singh. “Now more than ever, people in Cambridge and Waterloo regions deserve someone who gets what they’re going through. With the cost of living soaring out of control, people want to see their government fighting to address corporate greed and bring down costs."

“While Justin Trudeau is out-of-touch and refuses to stand up to the CEOs driving up costs, and Pierre Poilievre is working for rich condo developers and CEOs, New Democrats are fighting for you. José makes an excellent addition to this team.”

As someone who works in social work, José has a long history of working and fighting for better support for people in Cambridge. He also serves the Cambridge, Waterloo and Kitchener areas by working as the multi-agency community space manager for the AIDS Committee. Prior to this, he was a street outreach worker for the Cambridge Food Bank.

“I’ve seen firsthand how difficult things have become over the last few years. More people than ever before are turning to food banks or struggling to find an affordable place to live,” said de Lima. “There’s a lot of work to do, but I know New Democrats are the ones who are getting to work and fighting for lower costs, and for better protections for workers. The NDP got dental care for kids, seniors and people living with disabilities, saving families in our community hundreds of dollars, anti-scab to protect workers rights and good-paying union jobs, and they pushed to get the GST rebate twice when times were tough. I’m happy to be given this opportunity to represent and fight for people in Cambridge, and I’m excited to do this with the NDP.”
