CAMBRIDGE – An engaging story of finding — and eventually losing — his life-long love moved a Cambridge man another step closer to competing in the World Championship of Public Speaking in August.

Bill Cassels won best speaker in a Toastmasters International contest held in Cambridge Jan. 16, 2022, online. Cassels is retired from the engineering department at BWXT Canada. He's a member of Top Drawer Toastmasters in Cambridge, where he won a club contest two weeks ago.

Cassels' next competition is March 4, 2022, also online, when he competes in a division contest against Toastmasters from across southwestern Ontario. If he continues winning, he can eventually participate in the World Championship of Public Speaking in Nashville, Tennessee, Aug. 17-20, 2022 at the annual Toastmasters International Convention.

Also competing at the Division contest in March will be Murray Smith, of Ayr, who won the impromptu speaking contest. His Table Topics speech about avoiding a traffic ticket while a teenager — even though he argued with a police officer — was told off-the-cuff within three minutes after he was introduced and asked to talk about "suspicion." Smith is a management consultant and a member of Grand River Toastmasters in Cambridge.

In the International contest, Piyush Nanda of Cambridge placed second. He's a member of Cambridge Toastmasters. Prameet Biswas of Waterloo placed third. He's a member of Conestoga College Toastmasters.

Prameet also placed second In the Table Topics contest. Allan Krause of Cambridge placed third. He's a member of Top Drawer Toastmasters.

Toastmasters International members learn, practice and receive feedback about their public speaking, presentation and leadership skills during scheduled club meetings.
