Starting next week, Cambridge residents with live Christmas trees are able to set them out on the curb for the region's annual "tree-cycling" program.
From Jan. 6 to 17, the region will pick up live trees on the regularly scheduled waste collection days for each neighbourhood and chop them up into mulch.
Just like normal waste, the region asks that it be set out by 7 a.m. and residents remove all lights, ornaments, and stands.
They also add that trees are to be visible, not be bagged and any tree longer than 1.8 meters (6 feet) be cut in half.
Those who are looking to get rid of an artificial tree can still put it at the curb and it will be collected as a bulk item and get sent to the landfill, according to the region's website.
The region also suggests looking for ways to reuse it. "There are lots of ideas online such as creating coasters, bird feeders and more," they said.
Alternatively, residents can drop off their natural trees at the waste management site so that it is chipped up into mulch, but fees will apply.
There will be no curbside waste collection on Jan.1 due to the New Year's holiday.
During this time, collection day moves by one day:
- Wednesday collected on Thursday
- Thursday collected on Friday
- Friday collected on Saturday
The region also allows double the amount of garbage to be collected; this means residents can set out six bags instead of three.
