The Hespeler Legion, in partnership with the Optimist Club of Hespeler Cambridge, are once again accepting empties in support of veterans and various charities around the city.
Lynda Hagedorn, who's the poppy and membership chairperson for the Hespeler Legion, says the collection initiative is somewhat of a recent attempt to support the community.
“It came about during COVID as a way to raise funds during the closure,” Hagedorn said. “They are returned to the beer store and the money goes to veterans assistance and charity.”
Empty beer, liquor and wine bottles, skins and cans can be dropped off at the back of the legion located at 26 Schofield St.
Donating empties is one way to support the legion ahead of Remembrance Day on Friday, but it's not the only way, says Hagedorn.
“You can support the legion during Remembrance Day by obtaining a poppy, making a donation which is only used for veterans, their spouses and dependents,” she said.
“Come out to our service at the cenotaph on Nov. 11. The service begins at 10:30 a.m. at the corner of Tannery St. and Queen St.”
The legion plays an important role in the community year round, from supporting local sports teams to community events.
Anyone who is interested in becoming a member is free to do so and there’s always some sort of activity or fundraisers going on, says Hagedorn.
“Anyone can join any given legion,” she said.
“You don’t need to be a veteran. We have many sports and card events that anyone can play in, Saturday jamfests, meatdraws, the list goes on. Our donations go to many charities in the community.”
The Galt Legion will be putting on a parade on Nov. 11 beginning at 10:10 a.m., with a gathering featuring entertainment scheduled afterwards.
In Preston, their parade will begin at 10:30 a.m. and will go from the branch to the cenotaph. In the evening, they'll be hosting a remembrance banquet at a cost of $20 per person. Veterans, spouses and caregivers are free with the doors opening at 5 p.m. and dinner beginning at 6 p.m.
