Handbags and backpacks are filled with toiletries, hats, mittens, socks, scarves and other items and distributed to local shelters and organizations.

Handbags for Hope, a partnership with Mortgage Alliance and the Greater Golden Horseshoe Mortgages, is once again collecting gently used handbags to distribute to those in need during the holiday season.

The charity has been serving Cambridge, Kitchener-Waterloo, Guelph, Brantford and Hamilton for the last seven years.

They collect gently used handbags and backpacks along with new toiletries, hats, mittens, socks and scarves and then pack the bags with these items. The bags are then distributed throughout the communities where they are collected by way of shelters, places of worship and homes servicing those less fortunate.

Some of the places Handbags for Hope regularly drops off donations to include The Bridges, Salvation Army, Guelph Drop-in Centre, Brantford Salvation Army, Argus House, Hamilton shelters and more.

The drive for donations continues until Dec. 10 after which volunteers will begin packing and distributing donations by Dec. 15.

A box is available at Remax Real Estate Centre’s front foyer at 766 Old Hespeler Rd. and the Mortgage Alliance office located at 8 Sydenham St. in Dundas.

Pick ups can also be arranged in some cases.

Questions can be directed to Jenny Kotulak or Karen Monteiro , founder of Handbags for Hope at 519-590-6847.

The group also has a Facebook page with more information.
