Green living wall at city hall returned to former glory

Project to replace the 15-year-old living wall cost the city $254,500

The City of Cambridge has replaced the 15-year-old living wall at city hall a year later than originally planned at a 2022 budgeted cost of $254,500.

Over the summer, staff worked with an external service provider to replace the wall and plants that had deteriorated past their lifespan.

Originally created during construction of the building in 2008, the living wall is a key component of the building’s Gold Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Certification, said a press release.

LEED provides a framework for buildings that are healthy, efficient and provide cost-savings.

The living wall also provides many health benefits, such as humidification in the winter, improved air quality, and reduced noise pollution.

The city says it encourages residents to come experience this unique feature at City Hall Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
