Local MPs announce funding for local sports organizations to get more kids involved in sports

The federal government has committed $38,000 in funding foro KW KidSport in an effort to break barriers keeping children from accessing sports programs.

The announcement yesterday by Bardish Chagger, MP for Waterloo and Valerie Bradford, MP for Kitchener South-Hespeler, will see funding for around 150 kids in the KW area who wouldn’t have access to the programs otherwise.

This initiative is aimed to break barriers that are keeping kids from participating in sports, mainly in: Black, Indigenous, racialized communities, 2SLGBTQIA+ groups, people with low incomes, newcomers and persons with disabilities.

“The Community Sport for All Initiative is just one more way that our government is helping to keep life affordable for Canadians while ensuring that every child gets an equitable opportunity to experience the benefits of sport and physical activity opportunities,” said Bradford in a news release.

John Cooper, chairperson for KidSport Kitchener Waterloo Chapter is excited and grateful that their organization was selected to get funding, calling it a “significant financial investment in community youth sport.”

The organization’s KW chapter has awarded $371,187 in grants to 1536 children since its formation in 2013.
